Great device for a weekend mechanic
I currently own a different XTool scan tool (upgraded my D7 to a D8), but I was looking for a code reader with decent live data display to work with my son, as he wants to learn how to repair his own vehicles. We mainly work on our own cars (’02 Montana, ’03 CRV, ’10 Focus, ’16 Impreza, ’19 Cruze), although occasionally working on other vehicles to help others. The D6 fits that bill very well.The device is small (about the size of a cell phone), but has a good feel in the hands. The display is crisp. It looks, acts and feels like a more expensive diagnostic tool, but with a reduced set of functions. As a person first starting out doing auto repair, the D6 provides a full system scan of all of the onboard modules, as well as a full set of live data PIDs (OBD2 “Parameter ID”). Beyond a simple code reader, which just displays any current trouble codes that have been stored in the car, the D6 allows you to drill down into each module and display the live data that the onboard computers are monitoring giving the user more information to more accurately troubleshoot problems.I also own a few Bluetooth style dongles that have a wireless connection to a phone app. These are fine for basic code reading/clearing, some live data is allowed, and a list of common repairs for a particular trouble code. However, these types of devices tend to lead to people throwing parts at the problem, rather than diagnosing the issue with a data driven analysis.The cost of the D6 lands somewhere between a less expensive simple OBD2 code reader ($30-$100) and the more expensive professional level scan tools ($600 and up) which provide much more comprehensive bi-direction controls. In my opinion, as an amateur mechanic, the D6 is a great starting point.The D6 comes with lifetime updates to the software. More expensive tools are limited to 1 or 3 years included with the purchase, then an annual subscription is required if you want to keep up to date with bug fixes or manufacturers changes in the vehicles. In addition, customer support from XTool is excellent. I have had them schedule an onsite visit with their engineers to diagnose a problem with one of the actuation tests on my D8, and email responses to questions are usually answered within a day. They welcome feedback from customers, and if needed, respond with updates or software patches fairly quickly.Pros and cons of the D6:1. It is compact, but the small screen limits the number of live data graphs that can be displayed. Up to 4 PIDs can be combined in a single streaming graph which is a nice compromise. Individual graphs can be expanded from the list, but must be scrolled up and down the screen.2. A full system scan is about 25% faster than my D8. Very impressive, however no topology of the modules is displayed. This is understandable considering it’s price point.3. Includes Auto Scan for automatically recognizing newer vehicles specifications.4. Includes generic OBDII data scanning and 18 different “special functions” like oil light resets, and various other component adaptations, calibrations or initializations.5. DTC scan reports and live data snapshots are saved to the D6 and can be shared via email as PDFs. The system remembers previously sent email addresses. Currently, the reports are defaulting to km units for the vehicle’s mileage, but customer service is aware and will likely be addressing that in a future software update. Not a big deal. It does have global Settings for Units that cover U.S., Imperial and Metric.6. Vehicle system voltage is constantly monitored and displayed.Overall this is a pretty good starter scan tool. Much more than a simple code reader, it allows for a data driven diagnostic which will help pinpoint the problem. This saves you time and money on parts you may not need!

Decent scan tool
For being a lower priced scanner it is nice. I was able to do check the monitors in a couple cars, do a regen on one and do a throttle adaption on another. The scanner is good for someone who is starting out with tablet style scan tools. It is user friendly, has several good features and will get the job done. I especially like that is more compact than my bigger ones and is easy to setup and use. Only thing is it should come With a case. For being a lower priced scan tool it is a good option and worth the money.

Finally found the “Sweet Spot” scanner—Free lifetime updates ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I’ve been working on my own cars for years, and I’ve gone through a dozen cheap OBD2 readers that only tell you half the story. After a lot of research, I picked up this XTOOL D6, and honestly, it’s in a completely different league. If you’re tired of the “Check Engine” light being a mystery, this is the tool you want. It gives you access to “All system” and this is a Game Changer Most scanners under $200 only look at the engine. This D6 actually scanned my ABS, and even the Transmission module.
