Photoshop’s layers are arguably the most powerful aspect of the software’s user interface and are the key to successful image editing in Photoshop. Layers allow for both global and local adjustments to images and can be used to create a number of special effects. Best of all, layers allow for nondestructive editing of your original image. New Photoshop users often see layers as too complicated, and they miss out on the program’s full potential.
This book will remove the confusion factor by providing an in-depth introduction to layers. Clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations help the reader quickly master the tools that are relevant for photographers.
In this book you will learn about:
Working with and building multiple layers
Blending layers and which Options to use
Using layers to enhance and retouch your images
Creating and using layer masks
Creating luminosity and saturation layer masks
Using Smart Objects and Smart Filters
Advanced layer techniques
Time-saving shortcuts, tips, and tricks

A Practical Guide to Photoship Layers
Photoshop (CC version 2017) has evolved to become a complicated software program. Many photographers I know are intimidated by this program and its steep learning curve. They use other image processing software programs. These other applications perform some of its functions. But none to my knowledge have all of Photoshop’s functions few can they handle as many different file formats.Much of Photoshop’s usefulness and its complexity is due to its intricate layer functions. All books I have read on Photoshop dedicate at least a few chapters on this subject. Technology guru Juergen Gulbins’ book Mastering Photoshop Layers, A Photographer’s Guide published by Rocky Nook in 2013 is the best writing I have read on this subject. It is written in plain English. Layer functions are clearly described in a step by step approach which is illustrated by many screen prints. This is a book that explains the who, what where and why. Juergen explains keyboard shortcuts and how layer function works on older versions of Photoshop This is a book that you will want to keep beside your computer when you use Photoshop.

A good book on Photoshop
Photoshop is a demanding program, with a number of particular aspects of workflow which you must nail, in order to use it functionally. I have a bookshelf of books on Photoshop, but none seemed to be able to get me past the point of endless frustration. Tried the Youtube path as well, but got tired of poor quality information that just didn’t get me to where I wanted to go. So I bought this book and started to read it. The author’s style is a little unusual, but is readable and digestable. I perserved and achieved the results I was after.

Layers lay it on.
This is a very in depth book on Photoshop layers. It touches on some of the older versions of Photoshop and a little bit of Lightroom. He covers some things in CS6 that are different from past versions. For the most part he leaves no stone un turned and does so in plain English. You also are told about other ways of doing things including keyboard shortcuts. This is a book that you will want to keep beside your computer when you use Photoshop.

Check CAREFULLY before buying the Kindle version
I bought the Kindle version and the printed version. The book is very good. I rate the printed version as 5 star. There is a problem with formatting of the Kindle version. For example, the Photoshop options toolbar appears in the Kindle version at about one eight the height of the actual toolbar. It is impossible to tell what the toolbar is saying. For example, figure 3-80 shows the options for the shape tool. In the Kindle version this option toolbar appears about the thickness of a pencil lead. .A similar problem exists with the many of the menus. The menus in the Kindle version has been reduced to the size where they are difficult to decipher.I frequently use layers and masks. I wanted this book as a reference. I thought on my desktop to have the Kindle version open on one monitor while I used Photoshop on the other. The problem with the figures made this arrangement unworkable. So I bought the printed version. All things said, this is the best book I have found to provide an understanding of layers and masks.

Best Photoshop Guide I’ve Read (and use)
And I have and use three others. Gulbins’ guide will take you from the “short order cook” phase (like one of Kelby’s books, in my opinion), on your way to the “chef” category…to use a cooking analogy.

This is the best and most concise book I have found in defining and explaining how to use layers in Photoshop. Almost like a textbook but not quite… easy to read with lots screen shots. This should be required reading for anyone trying to understand and use layers in photo processing.

I have struggled trying to get to grips with layers, when saw this book for sale. I read a preview, liked it and bought it. couldn’t be without it. Now a happy chappy.

Layers are the most important tools in Photoshop, it’s what really makes this program be able to build anything you can imagine. I like that this approach, covers almost all versions of photoshop. Until you fully understand layers, you won’t be using any of the power of post processing.
