Motor and switch are horribly made
Terrible quality. I knew that “you get what you pay for” but the low quality of this grinder is honestly shocking to me. Even the case it was shipped in is low quality. I honestly didn’t expect this low level of quality because I have bought a cheap made-in-china grinder before that was actually pretty good, but it wasn’t cordless, so I bought this one because it’s cordless, but this grinder is absolutely terribly made.

A lot Good, but Too Much Problematic
A have a corded 4 1/2″ angle grinder I’ve used for years (actually two of them), but needed a battery-powered unit to use up on the roof away from any handy 120V mains power. I also have other power tools that use the Makita 21V battery, so that was a real positive with this unit. The unit came with two 4 Ahr 21V batteries and charger and a selection of sanding and grinding disks similar to ones I already have…have not used the DogTooth ones. The first problem I ran into was I tried to attach one of my wire-cup brushes to the grinder for my roofing job and found that it wouldn’t fit…it turns out the Dogtooth spindle thread is a Chinese metric M14-2 mm thread, which is much smaller that the standard American 5/8-11 spindle thread. It took me a while to determine the thread size, as it is no where in the items description or on the Amazon site. There is no user manual provided with the unit. Once I determined the thread size, I went looking for wire-cup brushes that would fit it, and there is almost nothing (I found one on Amazon) as almost everything being sold in the U.S. uses the standard 5/8-11 spindle thread. I did find an adapter that converts the M14-2 mm thread to the American 5/8-11 thread, which I purchased to allow other 5/8-11 attachments that I have to be used on my new Dogtooth unit. This is a serious negative for the unit. Luckily, the hole size for the disks is the standard American 7/8″ so my diamond blade fit just fine. As a next step I attached my attachments and found its spindle lock really marginal. It was hard to get engaged and sometimes was stuck engaged and had to be pried out…not a good sign. I then went to work with wire brushing and diamond grinding of some roofing tiles. That went OK at first, but within a few minutes I could no longer turn the unit on without pushing with all my strength on the On/Off switch. My thumb quickly fatigued from the effort and I barely completed the job… now it must take 10 to 20 lbs to turn the unit on. Angle grinders are somewhat dangerous units as the blade is fully exposed and is often required to be constantly tilted at various angles to complete the job. Its critical that it not require undo forces to turn the unit on and off between various cuts…this is a real safety issue. After completing the job, I really wanted to keep the unit, as it performed fine in its grinding operations and has 3 operating speeds, which my hard-wired units don’t have. However, the switch issue was impossible to live with. I reluctantly decided it must be returned…which it was. As a final issue, I had to totally disassemble the unit (guards, handles, and batteries) to put it in its case…and it doesn’t fit at all. I never could determine where the grinding disks were packaged. I returned them in a separate envelope.A lot of good operating points…but for me the negatives required its return. Needs some re-engineering for improved safety and use in the U.S. market.
