    Great for Comparison.
Great for Comparing to other versions of the DSM.I also have the DSM-III-R.I still need to get the DSM 1, the original version of the DSM-II, the regular DSM-III, the regular DSM-IV, the regular DSM-V, and the DSM-V-TR.This is great to compare to other versions to see what disorders have been added and removed, what disorders have been recoded or reclassified. This is great to compare to other versions to see what the APA has removed and added about any specific disorder (if any). This is great to compare to other versions to see what disorders have been renamed (if any). This is also great to see how woke the APA has became over the decades.

Get behind the scenes access to your psychiatrist’s mind
Ever wonder just what the heck it is your psychiatrist is basing your diagnosis off of? This is it!If you get other iterations like the dsm5 or dsm3, you can also learn to see how the diagnostic criteria has changed over time, and you can only imagine if not foresee the downstream consequences of such thought patterns being propagated across individuals pursuing a career in the field of psychiatry.

    An excellent and necessary resource
As an MSW student, I was required to buy this book; it’s certainly a vital resource for a social worker who will be working in community mental health. We provide the majority of the mental and behavioral health services in this country– not psychologists, not psychiatrists, not nurses, not nurse practitioners, not any other type of therapists. So we need to have this book! I also supplement this information with a tremendous amount of research through the University of Tennessee, so I am in a position to know that the committees got things right for the most part.My biggest point of contention when it comes to the DSM-IV-TR is that someone (who, I don’t know) chose to not include complex PTSD disorders of extreme stress, not otherwise specified, as was recommended by many experts in the field (Judith Hermann among others.) Because of this, all PTSD is still lumped together in the anxiety disorders. Complex PTSD needs to be in with the dissociative disorders; all the evidence points that way. Virtually all of the diagnostic criteria for PTSD puts it in the dissociative disorders category anyway; only a limited number of the most superficial symptoms are similar to the anxiety disorders. Quite honestly, I’m not sure why it’s still in there, except that some stubborn old MD’s are probably still arguing for it. If PTSD can’t have its own category, as it maybe should, then it likely should go in with the DD’s rather than the anxiety disorders. But this is my pet peeve, clearly!

    A PSYCHOLOGICAL MUST HAVE
THIS BOOK IS A REFERENCE BOOK OF MENTAL DISORDERS AND THE CLASSIFICATION FROM THE AMERICAN PSYCIATRIC ASSOCIATION. USE THIS GUIDE TO REFER TO SYMPTOMS AND POSSIBLE DIAGNOSIS. THIS IS A MUST HAVE IN EVERY MENTAL HEALTH DOCTORS OFFICE. IT IS THE NEWEST REVISED EDITION SO THE DISORDERS HAVE BEEN UPDATED.I USE THIS BOOK AS A REFERENCE VERY OFTEN IN MY STUDIES.To make myself clear, this book is used as a reference guide. This is not a book that would typically be read from front to back cover. This is used to diagnose particular mental disorders based on several areas of criterion. I have used this book to help determine differences in mental disorders and rule out suspected disorders. Symptoms which are present in each disorder are listed. This book is organized well. You can easily find an area in the book which then breaks down a disorder into that disorders different types. This is the newest verion though I believe an updated verion will be coming out soon. It is important to have the newest version because classification in older versions are no longer true. Each update is important to understand and clarify when diagnosing patients or students with a disorder.

    Just what the Doctor ordered
I am taken my first class for my Master’s in psychology and needed the DSM-IV-TR in order to complete course work. This one was reasonably priced, and made it to be in a timely manner. It was exactly as described on Amazon, and has helped me to gain a better understanding of psychological diagnosis. My instructor known as Dr. Matt required us to get a copy of the DSM-IV-TR for just that reason, and because it was required for some assignments even though it was not listed in necessary materials. Getting this book quickly saved my GPA.

    DSV
Imagine the price. Seriously, for a DSV Manuel, though outdated by one year, the information is still relevant for the V5 only has changes to coding and not the basic material. It’s a must have for nurses int he field of psychology, doctors, and for the layman who wants to understand the various psychological illness. As with all DSV’s, it present in a concise detail what to look for in an illness. It does not present a cure or counseling factor. Yet how can one understand the patient if one doesn’t understand the illness.I will recommend another work, Abnormal psychology. If one buys last years copy, for around 40.00 one can have a very decent start to a research library.to the laymen, I would recommend it, to the student, but them before you take the course.

I bought a new copy of DSM-IV-TR for around £22 here on Amazon.co.uk. It’s an Indian edition with the same text. The quality is lower than the original versions I’ve seen but the binding seems secure. This is perfectly readable, lighter weight (still a tome!) and a fraction of the price. I’m very happy with it.
