The GM MDI 2 is the next generation Global Diagnostic Interface tool for both current and future vehicles starting with Global A vehicles, and extending through future vehicle protocols and architectures. It’s a compact communication module with increased processing power and security that manages the transfer of data between a vehicle’s onboard ECU network with an auxiliary CAN bus. The GM MDI 2 replaces the MDI introduced in 2007 and offers faster programming speed than the MDI. The MDI 2 can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on all vehicles built since 1996 and into the future. Servicing the current generation Global A vehicles will require the diagnostic software, GDS2, Global Diagnostic System 2 running on a local PC device while the MDI or MDI 2 is connected to the vehicle. The MDI 2 connects to the vehicle via the J1962 connector using a new DLC cable. Connection between the MDI 2 and the PC can be accomplished via standalone (USB) or through a NEW Point-to-Point wireless feature, and the dealership network (CAT5, or Wireless). Genuine Bosch MDI 2
Box was a bit damaged due to poor packaging considering it had to come from the USA to Australia but luckily it was the cable end of the box and the MDI 2 was fine.Fired it up and firmware was updated and ran it through SPS, DPS, GlobalTIS & Tech2win and did not skip a beat. Very easy setup and hopefully it will last a long time being a genuine one and not a cheap clone that SPS Techline Connect are starting to lock accounts for people using.

I decided to go this route after reading about a competitor or two. I decided on this to reduce future hassles working on my GM stuff.The package arrived quickly, in good shape, and complete. I purchased the subscriptions I need, learned the steps to load the software and connect the interfaces. Next thing, my Volt was fixed. (Battery pack is fine, and the codes are gone, thank you) Onto my next projects.

Verify for Authenticity!!!
WARNING!!! Verify immediately upon receiving MDI that it is authentic by serial number/part number as a Bosch MDI from Germany and not a Chinese fake counterfeit unit. My experience was the latter, fake unit. Someone swapped and returned unit for refund ($700 – $800) profit. I’m hoping for karma! These returns are being repackaged as Used, like New Condition and not being verified for part number/serial number on packaging. Also, another Dead giveaway is the missing GM logo in upper case letters. Some may come with the lower case gm sticker in box! 😡

Had to make the move to purchase this as all newer models have multiple modules that need programing and going to the dealer every time gets to be annoying, takes some time to understand all the programing concept, AC DELCO got great support as long as you got new OEM part if you tell them you got a part from a junk yard phone line will drop at a lightening speed LOL…but new is always safer and less trouble.

Purchased this tool as a GM Tech in my dealership. Let’s start with me saying this is a Genuine OEM Bosch MDI 2. If your probably looking at this then your either own a shop or work at GM dealership. This unit is just a scan tool and requires a program by GM in order for this to work which is GDS 2. I will not go into the details of this tool because vast majority that will be purchasing this tool already mostly likely know the capabilities of the tool. The tool GM wanted to sell me which is the MDI 2 was $1800 which was a markup price. Quick search and was amazed on found it here on Amazon and was well cheaper than the one GM was selling me. I wanted this for two reasons, one GM in 2020 is making the MDI 1 phased out so the MDI 2 is taking place. In 2020 GM will be stopping the support for the MDI 1 and two, we have about 30 techs in our shop and limited MDI’s so when many are in use your stuck waiting for it and being flat rate doesn’t wok very well. Well here we are, the MDI 2 is now my own and do not lend it out.I will not bore you with comparisons about MDI 1 and 2 because just Google that but a few things i will mention. The kit comes with all the necessary cords, wifi, and cables. The RCA to OBD11 is double the length of the MDI 1. It has a stronger wifi which is nice because i do not need to connect a cord (just for programming). The unit doesn’t require batteries like the previous version.This kit does require a subscription to GDS 2 in order to use this scan tool. It’s not something that can be used on a computer. It requires specific software and because it’s mine and i have the software on my laptop at work i have the ability too use it at home without taking company property home. I personally didn’t want to pay the price but with the two months i have been using it, it has made my job easier without having to walk around looking for one. I am so glad i waited to find it on Amazon cheaper. The only thing i do however wish it came is a case, it just comes in a cardboard box but i have learned to live it with. Overall, the unit is working out fantastic and happy with the purchase.
