The definitive guide to photo restoration
If you had to purchase just one book on photo restoration this is the one. If you own one of the earlier editions this is an incremental improvement. Another reviewer was disappointed and if you owned one of the earlier editions this will not be all new content for you. It is worth buying and I own all of the three prior editions. The authors provide you the practice files and the steps necessary to begin restoring and retouching photos. If you work through the book you will become a capable restoration artist and have all of the tools necessary for photo restoration. If you purchase this with Ctein’s book and Wolper’s book you will have all of the photo restoration library you need. Each book is very good but these to me are the three best on the subject of photo restoration. If you are interested in photo retouching there are other books that focus solely on that subject but the treatment of it in the 4th edition is good. I have waited for the 4th edition and understand why some owning the earlier editions might hope for an entirely new book but frankly not a lot has changed with the software and techniques of photo restoration. I was hoping that the book would devote a little more pages to especially thorny photo restoration issues and problems.

Current and comprehensive
This is an excellent book. Well written and comprehensive. In this, the 4h Edition, Katrin Eiesmann and her associate writers have brought the earlier editions up to 2018; software, supplies, and techniques. If you are into photo restoration and retouching it is great. Besides the writer’s excellent knowledge and skill set, there are tips and tricks salted through the text from additional expert associates. One Caveat, you must be “Photoshop” savvy in order to effectively use the material in this text. The authors make it clear in the intro that this document is not intended as a primer. I owned the first two editions and was absolutely amazed at the techniques and processes. Back around the 2001-2003 period when the first two editions came out, they were a breath of fresh air for me. I was transitioning from the “wet darkroom” to the “digital.” Katrin’s text really convinced me that it was the way to go.

A great book on the restoration using Photoshop shop. This book has less information on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom than in an earlier edition. An excellent book not for the beginners.

I had the previous paper 3rd edition of this which was excellent but I wanted the kindle version on my laptop. I ordered the fourth edition. I was disappointed that all their examples are now using ACR and other programs throughout instead of Lightroom CC & Photoshop, which I have. In the item description on Amazon it said it was Adobe CC. I have found it really annoying and the layout of the book harder to follow so have gone back to the paper 3rd edition that was written by Katrin Eismann that has more step by step tutorials. So only 3 stars.
