O’Reilly’s “Missing Manual” series claims each of its titles is “The book that should have been in the box”. While I can’t address the entire series, I have purchased and used several of them, including the missing manuals for four different versions of Photoshop Elements (PSE).PSE 13 is generally similar at the user interface level to versions going back to PSE 8, and it remains –like its predecessor versions– extremely feature dense. This makes it both a powerful digital image editor, and a potential deep well of frustration for users. While PSE 13 includes some enhanced automated and guided image editing functions, users hoping to harness its full power will achieve this sooner if they grab some help. Barbara Brundage offers this assistance in a detailed guide that explores the higher functions of PSE, while respecting the challenges many readers may have in grasping complex technology.Brundage offers both conceptual overviews and tutorials of PSE 13’s interface, functions and changes since PSE 12. She effectively breaks down the the concepts of file management, basic editing, image manipulation and sharing of the results of these digital editing techniques.This book is particularly effective in addressing the two areas that can lead to delight –or despair– among would-be photo editors: selection and layering in PSE.The conceptual discussions and tutorials in this book are intelligently discussed and laid out in good detail. The companion materials to this book are online (“the missing CD”), and include links to sample images used for demonstrations in the book, and to other online resources to assist with PSE mastery. The author and creative team both have links to their own websites and email addresses listed in the introduction. You will also see that I have responded directly to other reviewers’ comments. This indicates strong ownership and a high level of accessibility. In addition, the author readily –and correctly– points out that many high quality step-by-step guides to most things you might want to do are readily found on popular video sites.Two things to note before diving into this book and your PSE 13 experience:(1) The book’s table of contents lists three appendices at the rear of the book. However, only one is printed with the book (“Installation and Troubleshooting”). The other two appendices recap of all the menu entries for the PSE Organizer and PSE Editor) are online content (the too-cute “missing CD” materials). I found the detail on the current installation of downloaded versions of PSE 13 to be light on details that might give less technically inclined Windows users the confidence to understand the paired of executable and compressed files they will have to manage for the installation process; this is perhaps the book’s biggest weakness.Finally, sometimes the book gushes just a bit about the overall capabilities of PSE (“while it’s doing wonderful things to your picture…”). These are minor points, and in no way diminish from the overall usefulness of this must have reference for users of PSE 13.

Teach you everything.
You will learn EVERYTHING in this about PSE 13. Even if you know the software already, you still can learn things.It’s 600 pages. I bought the Kindle version and here is why. You can cut and paste text into OneNote.Why I do that? That way I can really learn it. So I have one note open on one screen (I have 2) and on the other one PSE (the software).With one note I can put bold, add notes, Stars for what is important, a blue star fot procesure (things to practice later). I can also create a link to a another oneNOte page. that way I can find these importat things or stuff I want to remember.I also have a OnteNOte page for the shortcut keys.I am now page 200 (Yé!) there is 400 to go.I do photography and I use it with Lightroom. So the 2 together make it really do nice things. You love to take pictures, get Photoshop Elements, it’s a must.The manual is aimed at BEGINERS. That is really importat to know. If you know NOTHING about Photoshop, you will know alot after.Why I choosed that book, it’s because all the others are incompleted. Even the User manual that come with the software is badly written.This book as it all. It’s a bit borring at time to read, but anyway. Eventually I will reach the end, I do a little everyday or when I can.It also save me ALOT of time. Because I am addicted to help forums. And people are not expert there, it’s just random people trying to help, sorta or showing they know something.It’s nothing compare to this book. This book is full and complete.If you prefer vudeo tutorials. Lynda and other youtube are great, but not excellent. They don’t teach you the COMPLETE software, like this book.What that book is not:it teach you how to use the software, but it does not teach you the next step. How to ex: make your picture look nice and everything.Let’s say it teach you how to drive, after reading it you need to know where you want to drive to. That is where all those youtube and lynda and most other book are for, because they are incomplete, but sometime they teach you how to get a specific result about something.Probably a good example is when you learn to read, that book teach you how to read and write. But then you need to go in a library and star reading and practicing what you learned.Probably the best step after this book is to google Photoshop element magazin. Because it will show you how to use what you learned in this book to make awesome things.But if you just to videos and Photoshop element magazin, you will miss alot of things and will use the software at only 10%.Take your time, do not hurry the software is awesome, it take time to learn. but when you do, you can do great things with it, and you will use it for years.And you will save alot of money over the Adobe photoshop/lightroom subscription, because PSE is alot cheaper, but do so many things the real Photoshop do. I wish I how that software 10 years ago or more.

Great Resource For Photoshop Elements 13.
This is a great resource, but, is not easy to follow if you are just starting the Photo enhancing experience. I loved the Microsoft Digital Imaging Pro, but, since that is no longer available, I ordered Photoshop Elements 13. While I know it is an excellent product, for me it just requires lots of time to learn to use. This book helps a lot but I still think a bit of prior knowledge of photo enhancing would make it easier to use.

A great companion with your new photo editing software – Photoshop Elements 13.I am half way through the book and I already feel very confident when working in the Elements.Highly recommended for beginners and for anyone with a patchy knowledge of the software.

I ordered this with my copy of Elements 13 because I knew it would be an essential complement to the software.And it is – if you need to know, here it is, and never mind the silly jokes.Four stars not five because appendices B and C, which go through the Organiser (as I prefer to spell it being on this side of the herring pond) and the Editor, menu by menu are . . . online and not in print. Come on, O’Reilly, your customers buy Missing Manuals because they want useful material in print. Please remedy next time!
