Dan Margulis – Professional Photoshop Color Correction 5th Edition
I read this book cover to cover and understood about two thirds of it. That may seem a poor score, but it’s not, because almost all was new and very useful material. Once I get experienced in the techniques of this book, I am sure I will reread parts of it and understand more. This book covers techniques that I had not read anywhere else. Furthermore, it explains those techniques more extensively than anywhere else. Those explanations are great, because they make you understand what you do, instead of just apply a technique. Most Photoshop books don’t take that route.Let me list what this book does and what it doesn’t.- As the title says, it is all about “Correction”. It will not tell you how to capture. Don’t expect tips about white balance, ISO, F-stop setting, whether to shoot raw or JPEG etc. The book simply assumes a photograph taken, and tells you how to enhance it where necessary.- The title also contains the word “Color”. That is somewhat too restrictive, because there is extensive covering of sharpening techniques, a chapter about black/white conversions and a lot about contrast enhancement.- The book tells you how to get realistic colors. If you are interested in artistic effects like a retro look etc. then don’t expect to find much guidance here.- It clearly explains the characteristics of different color spaces, as background for effective corrections. Sometimes it can be helpful to convert an image to a different color space (CMYK or LAB) and do the work there. This is something I knew virtually nothing about before reading this book, but now feel much more confident in.- Understanding all the text requires a good knowledge and experience in Photoshop. That is not a bad thing at all, but it is important to realize before you buy.- It teaches not only to correct photos but also to effectively assess color. After reading this book, I can’t help looking at images and thinking, “this looks way too blue” or “Wow, this certainly could use a correction in LAB”.To summarize, this book does what it does: explaining color (and other) correction techniques, very, very well. This is one of the Photoshop books that I learned most of. I remember working on a photograph years ago, taken in JPEG with an incorrect WB setting. It cost me hours and the result was not satisfactory. After reading Dan Margulis’ book, I restarted correcting this image and was able to get believeable and strong colors in a few minutes. The book is that good.Highly recommended.

    Fits my way of working
First off there are plenty of good reviews here that cover the content so I won’t repeat them. Two things stand out:1. Dan Margulis is very opinionated. Topics like 8 bit vs 16 bit color and automated calibration are a couple of examples. However, in each case he provides examples and theory to back up his contentions. And also very important his background opinions are out front and challenge my thinking.2. His coverage of human perception is refreshing. This is regularly ignored in many books. So a couple of Cons so I don’t sound like Dan’s promotional department.1. The coverage of RAW is outdated, which is to been expected in a rapidly growing area. Some of Dan’s criticism of RAW have since been addressed in software updates.2. Like most digital photography books the index is limited. An example is Camera Raw where there are 17 page number entries, but no idea what the content of each is. Many are just passing references to the word Raw. I tend to do a fast read of a new book and then go back when I have time to give areas of interest more attention. Unless I develop my own index I spend a lot of time on finding the material again. Sounds like a good Amazon or Google project to develop a massive search-able cross index of books on a subject.I also own Photoshop LAB Color Photoshop LAB Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace, which led me to buy this book. It together with this book has been invaluable in my current project of digitizing my library of BW negatives and slides (including early Ektachrome that have turned red) dating back to the 1950’s.So bottom line this book and Photoshop LAB Color will get a lot of use in the months to come.

I love this book. I am a photographer/colorist/retoucher. I implement the techniques and workflow as outlined in this book. It is a very pragmatic approach.

dear god of everything rant like this guy claps on about some pointless things. It needs a good editor to remove about all of the authors pointless stories to turn it into a what could be and should be and I desperately would like it to be tutorial book. But until that day happens you will be reading something that is just intolerable, pointless and a needless waste of oxygen generating tree’s book.
